Mr König (54) calls the police: his wife Beate (37) is lying on the floor at home, murdered by being shot in the head. With her hands she is clutching a left shoe, size 42, Sarelli brand with a corrugated rubber sole, presumably the perpetrator's shoe. Two elderly women who live in the house next door tell the inspector about a heated argument between the kings and that a young, dazzling-looking man whom they call "one-two-three" because his car has the license plate "RK-123" that I always entered the house from Rosenstrasse on the garden side via an old garden gate when Mr. König is on a business trip.
