occupation

The girl Hirut (original title: Difret ) is a film directed by Zeresenay Mehari. It is based on a legal precedent in which a 14-year-old girl shot and killed her tormentor and was charged with murder.

The film premiered on January 18, 2014 at the Sundance Film Festival . It was also shown at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival in the Panorama section. The German theatrical release was on March 12, 2015.

action

14-year-old Hirut Assefa was kidnapped by several men on her way to school near Addis Ababa in 1996 , and one of them raped her. He intends to marry Hirut; for this it is allowed in the rural areas of Ethiopia, according to the old tradition of the "Telefa", to kidnap the bride before the marriage. However, Hirut manages to escape. During the pursuit, she shoots her tormentor in self-defense with a rifle. She is charged with murder, a crime that can, in the worst case scenario, be punishable by the death penalty. Hirut is supported in her fight for justice by lawyer Meaza Ashenafi , who provides free legal assistance to women and children in need. In the course of the process it becomes clear that they are not only fighting for Hirut's life, but also against antiquated traditions and oppression.

criticism

The film received mostly positive reviews. At Rotten Tomatoes , 88% of the reviews are positive, out of a total of 26 reviews. The film service judges that the film is a "sometimes rough developed drama [...], shaped by its great feeling for the roots of oppression and lack of perspective anchored in people's minds".
