action

In Madame Kramer's “Salon” in Helsinki there is a lot of fun. The most noisy guest is the law student Arne, the son of the late State Councilor Schmidt. Because Arne's mother found out about her son's lottery life, she takes him to the country to see her brother John during the semester break. She hopes that the rural solitude will give him better ideas. Soon after arriving, Arne falls in love with Alli, the daughter of a day laborer , and she returns his love. The meeting point of the two is always a small forest lake in which they bathe naked.

At the end of the holidays, Arne returns to Helsinki with his mother. Alli's parents are not unhappy about this; because they have other plans for their daughter - she should marry a servant chosen by them. Alli gets so angry about this that she leaves her parents' house and travels to Helsinki. After a long search, she finally finds her lover's house. Because his mother needs a new maid, Alli can start work there immediately. The love between the girl and Arne is about to flare up again. At first Arne's mother had no idea of this relationship. Even when she surprises the two of them one day during their love affair, she tolerates the relationship because she senses that Alli is exerting a positive influence on her son. However, this changes quickly when she realizes that Arne is serious about his love for Alli. The girl is released without notice. Arne's mother then decides to travel to Stockholm with her son to make him forget Alli. The night before departure, the lovers find each other again. During their tête-à-tête , they are caught by Arne's mother. A dramatic scene follows in which Arne takes sides for his loved one. But she thinks Arne is only doing this out of pity and runs away.

At daybreak, Alli stands in the harbor and stares after the ship that is taking Arne to Stockholm.

criticism

The lexicon of international film describes the work succinctly as a "dusty story from Finland in primitive film form".
