action
Marketing expert Helene Hempel, who lives in the USA, comes to her native Leipzig to quickly divorce Paul, as someone else is already waiting in New York to marry her. Paul still loves Helene and doesn't want to get a divorce.
Bertha Krause and her grandson Benjamin pursue a conspiracy surrounding the Monument to the Battle of the Nations . The computer enthusiast Benjamin has gained access to the computer network of the city of Leipzig and found out that the mayor and finance department head are planning to sell the city's landmark Völkerschlachtdenkmal to an American company in order to use the proceeds to make Leipzig the first city in Germany to be debt-free. The memorial is to be dismantled and rebuilt in the California desert. Bertha wants to prevent this together with the residents of her old people's home.
When Bertha falls victim to the excitement in a café and dies of a heart attack in front of Helene's eyes, Helene comes into possession of the disk on which the dismantling plans are saved. Since Helene spent hours of fear in its dark walls in her childhood, she avoided the Monument to the Battle of the Nations, "The Monster". Well, curious, she wants to solve the matter herself. After she meets the head of the senior group Professor Braun, she puts Benjamin, Paul and herself in great danger. Braun seems to be responsible for the disappearance of several Americans in the vaults of the monument. Now Helene's feelings for Paul are also becoming clear.
production
The film is a low-budget production by the Leipzig production company Sunset-Movie Production . The shooting took place in December 2000 in Leipzig. The operator of the Leipzig cinema “Prager Frühling” Miriam Pfeiffer and the actor and director René Reinhardt wrote the script, directed and produced the film. Pfeiffer's long-standing acquaintance with Corinna Harfouch made for a familiar face in the leading role.
All actors worked without a fee. Many Leipzig scene locations made their rooms available free of charge.
Reviews
“Leipzig deserves it - finally a cult film of its own that has it all, from exciting to weird! Such a loving look at the autumn fair city has probably never been thrown in the cinema. […] The directing duo [… relies] above all on a very sympathetic actor ensemble, from which Corinna Harfouch as Helene and Thomas Dehler as Paul stand out. When both of them share the screen, 'The Monstrosity' breathes poetry and honesty. "
