The square

The square or the quadrangle is a simple solitaire played with a French hand of 32 cards or 52 cards. Covering up is a very similar game of patience with slightly different rules.

Rules of the game and variants

Card image in the game: The top two cards have a cross color and can be covered or removed.

Like most solitaire games, the square is a deck of cards for one person. The playing cards, optionally a Skat sheet with 32 or a simple Rummy sheet with 52 cards, are shuffled and placed face down as a stack ( talon ) in front of the player. The top four cards are picked up and placed face up in the shape of a square. Two cards of the same suit ( clubs ♣ , spades ♠ , hearts ♥ or diamonds) appear ♦), these two cards are put aside and new cards from the talon are laid out in the resulting gaps. Alternatively, the pairs can be covered with new cards. If three cards of the same suit appear, only two are removed, the third card remains.

The cover-up variant is generally played with 52 cards. Here the cards are placed next to each other and as soon as cards of the same color or the same values such as jacks or cards with the same numerical value appear, they can be covered with new cards. Three or all four cards can be hidden if they match other open cards in color or value.

End of the game: No two cards match, the solitaire does not come up.

The game ends when there is only one card of each color in front of the player and accordingly no more pairs can be formed. In this case the game comes to a standstill and the solitaire does not come up. Solitaire opens when the talon is completely used up and all cards have been cleared at the end.
