The moss mold beetles (Dasycerinae) are a subfamily of the beetles .
features
The representatives of this group are very small and reach body sizes between 1.5 and 2.4 millimeters. The body is light brown to brown in color and heavily sculptured by chitin strips . The long, hair-shaped antennae have three to eight particularly thin limbs.
Way of life
The body surface of the beetle is usually covered with a hardened secretion. The animals live on fungal threads and rotting plants and are mainly found in moldy soil, in moss cushions and in rotten dead wood .
Systematics
The moss mold beetles used to be regarded as an independent family, but are now integrated as a subfamily in the family of the short-winged species (Staphylinidae). The moss mold beetles are represented in Europe with only one genus ( Dasycerus ) and four species, in Central Europe there are only two species from this genus - Dasycerus sulcatus Brongniart, 1800 and Dasycerus jonicus Reitter, 1884. However, the occurrence of the latter species in Austria is doubted .
