Datainspektiven is the Swedish authority for data protection based in Stockholm .

It monitors the compliance with laws by authorities, companies, organizations and individuals and processes complaints from citizens, conducts public relations and participates in the data protection compliance of laws. The authority also issues permits for credit information and collection activities, among other things.

Data inspections were used in 1973 to monitor the Datalag (Data Act, SFS 1973: 289; the world's first national data protection act), which came into force on July 1 of the same year . Between 1998 and 2001 the Personuppgiftslag (Personal Data Act, SFS 1998: 204) gradually replaced the old Data Act and is now the legal basis for the agency's work. In addition to other laws and ordinances, the Inkassolag ( Inkassogesetz , SFS 1974: 182) of 1974 and the Kreditupplysningslag (Credit Information Act , SFS 1973: 1173) of 1973 represent an important basis for official activity.

Göran Gräslund has been the director of data inspections since April 1, 2004 . The agency employs around 40 people, most of whom are lawyers. The authority is assigned to the Ministry of Finance .

Datainspektiven is both a member of the Article 29 data protection group , in which she is represented by Göran Gräslund, and a member of the International Conference of Commissioners for Data Protection and the Protection of Privacy .
