St. Jerome in the case

Vincenzo Catena (* around 1470/80 probably in Venice ; † between September 10 and 29, 1531 there ; also Vincenzo di Biagio ) was an Italian painter.

Life

Catena was the son of Biagio Catena, who probably came from Istria . Nothing is known about his artistic beginnings, but the earliest pictures show a clear closeness to Antonello da Messina , Cima da Conegliano and Benedetto Diana . He found his own style by studying the works of Giovanni Bellini and above all Giorgione .

Catena must have achieved a great reputation quickly, because the Doge Leonardo Loredan asked him to do assignments at an early age . In no time at all, he became a busy and wealthy man. This is all the more astonishing as his works, in contrast to those of his contemporaries Giorgione , Tizian , Palma il Vecchio and others, remained strangely backward and did not even come close to their level. As early as around 1520, Marcantonio Michiel , with whom he was apparently friends, listed numerous works by his hand that were in various private collections in Venice. In addition to Madonna and altar paintings, Catena was valued primarily as a portrait painter. This brought him good contacts with scholars and especially the Venetian nobility. In 1528 he was the best man at the wedding of Sebastiano del Piombo's sister . He changed his will for the last time on September 10, 1531, and died on September 29 of the same year.
