David "Dave" Ridgway (born April 24, 1959 in Stockport , England ) is a retired Canadian American football and Canadian football player. He played thirteen seasons in the position of kicker with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Canadian Football League .

Career

Born in Stockport in 1959 , Ridgway emigrated to Canada with his family in 1974. From 1977 to 1981 he attended the University of Toledo , where he played college football for the Toledo Rockets . In the CFL Draft 1981 he was selected in the seventh round by the Montreal Alouettes , but they dismissed him in June 1981. He then had a trial training with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers , before he was committed in April 1982 by the Saskatchewan Roughriders .

In 1987 Ridgway was exchanged by the Roughriders for the Edmonton Eskimos , who sent him on to the Alouettes. However, the Alouettes were disbanded shortly afterwards and in the subsequent Dispersal Draft , the Roughriders chose Ridgway. In 1989, 1990 and 1991 he won the Dave Dryburgh Memorial Trophy as the top scorer in the Western Division. In 1989 he reached the 77th Gray Cup with the Roughriders . There he scored four field goals , including the winning field goal known as "The Kick" when time was running out. Ridgway was named the most valuable Canadian in the Gray Cup . Ridgway was also a good and constant kicker in the following years, which earned him the nickname "Robokicker". Only in the 1995 season he achieved poor performance. In April 1996 he retired from professional sports. At the time he held eight league records, 18 Roughrider records and was the top scorer of the Roughriders. A year later, his jersey number 36 was banned from the Roughriders. In 2003 he was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame .
