Under the name Davenport Estate Historic District , a property belonging to the Davenport family with several historic country houses and outbuildings is registered as a Historic District in the National Register of Historic Places . The approximately 9 hectare area is located in the urban area of Milton in the state of Massachusetts in the United States and is now administered as the Wakefield Estate by the Wakefield Trust .

Part of the Historic District

The early 18th century John Davenport Farmhouse is at the end of a private driveway that branches off Brush Hill Road. The timber-frame building, with the front facing south, is two stories high and has a gable roof covered with gray asphalt shingles and a centrally positioned fireplace. There is a one-story extension on the north side. The house is clad with wooden shingles and stands on a stone foundation, the visible outer surfaces of which are grouted with concrete . On the north and west sides, an external bulkhead leads into the cellar.

On the ground floor there are, among other things, the lobby, a bathroom and the kitchen, which has been enlarged by the extension, while the upper floor, which can be reached via a staircase in the lobby, is further rooms and a further bathroom. From there, access to the attic is also possible.

Other components of the district are a garage, the Isaac and Mary Davenport House , built predominantly in the style of Georgian architecture between 1794 and 1798 , a former carriage house, a carpenter's shop, a greenhouse, a garden pavilion, a building known as a Red Cottage , each with a sheep and hen house as well as the house of the employees.

Historical meaning

Davenport Estate has been owned by the same Milton-based family for more than 300 years, of which John Davenport, born in 1664, is believed to be the founder. The family initially ran agriculture and continuously built up their wealth through further economic activities. Isaac Davenport, who worked as a merchant in Boston , built a country house on the property of his family's former farm in the 1790s, which he bequeathed to his descendants. In the 20th century the property came into the possession of Henry Binney, a relative of the family. With the death of Mary May Binney Wakefield, the trust company Mary MB Wakefield Charitable Trust was founded, which has since managed and maintained the property. The property is accessible as a public park and arboretum .
