David Baruch Malament (born December 21, 1947 ) is an American philosopher .

Malament studied mathematics at Columbia College and received his PhD in philosophy from Rockefeller University in 1974 . After holding various teaching positions at the University of Chicago , he moved to the position of Distinguished Professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of California, Irvine .

Malament's work focuses on the fundamental concepts of special and general relativity .

Probably his most highly regarded single work deals with the Einstein synchronization . He thinks he can deny the question of whether this is a pure convention by tracing it back to the symmetry of the temporality relation . Adolf Grünbaum , whose formulation of conventionality he primarily attacks, is unconvinced. Sahotra Sarkar and John Stachel also contradict Malament, while z. B. Robert Rynasiewicz defends Malament's argument. In 2006 the debate will continue in the specialist literature.

Malament was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1992. For 2014 he was awarded the Lakatos Award .
