Johann Gottfried Flegel

Johann Gottfried Flegel (born May 18, 1815 in Leipzig , † December 27, 1881 in Leipzig) was a wood cutter , wood carver and paper restorer .

As an autodidact, Flegel devoted himself to the visual arts, in particular the art of woodcutting, and founded a studio for xylography (Greek art of woodcutting) in Leipzig , which he also signed with the first letter XA for Xylographische Anstalt . He was an excellent wood cutter, who mainly based on designs and drawings by Wilhelm von Kaulbach and Bernhard Neher the Elder. J. produced for the Leipzig publisher Georg Wiegand .
