David Barnouw , also NDJ Barnouw (born March 11, 1949 in Retranchement ) is a Dutch scientist at the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation (NIOD).

Life

Barnouw studied political science at the University of Amsterdam and was hired as a scientist at the Rijksinstituut voor Oorlogsdocumentatie (RIOD, now NIOD) in 1979. His life partner Elma Verhey is a journalist for Vrij Nederland magazine .

Barnouw has worked on various aspects of the history of the Netherlands under the German occupation, such as NSB leader Meinoud Rost van Tonningen and the hunger winter in the Netherlands . In 1986 he published the scientific edition of the diary for Anne Frank and in 2012 presented the history of reception so far before the diary became public domain in 2015 .

After 1996 he was commissioned by the NIOD to investigate the Srebrenica massacre and the role of the Dutch blue helmet soldiers and their commander Thomas Karremans , the result of which in 2002 led to the resignation of the cabinet Wim Kok .
