David C. Dobson (born November 17, 1962 in Salt Lake City ) is an American mathematician.

Dobson studied at Utah State University ( Bachelor 1986) and Rice University , where he received his PhD in 1990 . After that he was at the University of Minnesota , from 1992 as Visiting Assistant Professor. In 1993 he became Assistant Professor, 1996 Associate Professor and 2000 Professor at Texas A&M University . Since 2002 he has been a professor at the University of Utah .

Dobson deals with applied mathematics , for example optimal design of components and materials in photonics (such as methods for band structure calculations in photonic crystals and optimal diffraction gratings ), scattering and diffraction of electromagnetic waves, electronic and optical properties of materials with determination of effective barriers for wave propagation problems in Media, inverse problems.

In 2000 he received the first Felix Klein Prize . From 1997 to 1999 he was a Sloan Research Fellow .
