David Filby

David Filby (born April 14, 1810 in Husum , † February 17, 1879 in Hamburg ) was a German optician, mechanic and politician .

Filby came to Hamburg in 1820, he did an apprenticeship in the workshop of Heinrich Johann Kosbü from 1830. From 1837, after his apprenticeship, he began as a Bönhase to secretly manufacture and sell his own sextants . After receiving his citizenship in 1840, he founded a shop for nautical instruments and maps, in which instruments were also repaired by him. In 1862 the company was taken over by Carl Christian Plath from Hamburg .

Filby belonged to the Hamburg citizenship from 1859 to 1879 .

Foundations were established from Filby's estate. The Filby Foundation supported seafarers from Hamburg who became needy or their widows. The Filby Prämien Foundation awarded prizes for the best of the year in individual classes at the Hamburg Seafaring School.

David Filby was married to Elisabeth Charlotte Maria, nee Möller.

In the Ohlsdorf cemetery , donors of the Althamburg Memorial Cemetery are reminded of David Filby and his wife on the collective grave plate.
