David Flusser

David Flusser (born September 15, 1917 in Vienna , † September 15, 2000 in Jerusalem ) was a Jewish religious scholar , researcher of Palestinian and rabbinical traditions of Judaism , the Qumran and the New Testament .

Life

Flusser grew up in Prague and Freiberg in Bohemia (Przibram, Pibrans). A Christian pastor aroused his interest in Jesus and religious topics in Bohemia in 1938, he later described his career.

In 1939, after the occupation of the Czech Republic by German troops , he emigrated to the Mandate Palestine . There, after the establishment of the State of Israel in 1962, he became Professor of Comparative Religious History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . He was a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and was awarded the Israel Prize . The focus of his occupation was on researching the New Testament and its rabbinical- Pharisaic background, using the Qumran writings . In addition to German, Czech, Hebrew and English, Flusser spoke several ancient languages.

Flusser was involved in the Judeo-Christian dialogue and worked with Clemens Thoma , the head of the Institute for Judeo-Christian Research IJCF in Lucerne. In the 1975/76 winter semester, Flusser worked there as a visiting professor.

Flusser was married to Chana Flusser, both had sons, Jochanan and Uri, and seven grandchildren. He is the cousin of Vilém Flusser .
