Schillebeeckx (1979)

Edward Cornelis Florentius Alfons Schillebeeckx OP (born November 12, 1914 in Antwerp , † December 23, 2009 in Nijmegen ) was a Belgian Dominican and Roman Catholic theologian .

Life

Edward Schillebeeckx was born into a large family (the sixth of 14 siblings) and raised in the Christian faith by his deeply religious parents. As a high school student he attended a Jesuit boarding school in Turnhout . In 1934 he joined the Dominican order , took the name of the order Eduardus Henricus and studied philosophy and theology at the Catholic University of Leuven and at the college of his order in Ghent . In 1941 he was ordained a priest.

From 1943 to 1945 Schillebeeckx taught dogmatics at the Catholic University of Leuven. After the end of the war he went to further studies with his friars Yves Congar and Marie-Dominique Chenu at the religious college Le Saulchoir in Étiolles near Paris and also studied at the Sorbonne and at the École pratique des hautes études (EPHE) in Paris. At EPHE he received his doctorate in 1946 with a dissertation on De sacramentele heilseconomie (The sacramental economy of salvation ), which was later published in bookshops in 1952. He was then a lecturer at the Dominican College in Leuven and taught dogmatics again at the Catholic University there. In 1958 Schillebeeckx was appointed professor of dogmatics at the Catholic University of Nijmegen . His inaugural lecture Op zoek naar de levende God (In Search of the Living God) caused a sensation, insofar as it opened the Catholic-Dutch theology, which at that time was largely neo - scholastic , to the nouvelle théology .

As a personal advisor to Cardinal Bernard Alfrink of the Netherlands, he participated in the Second Vatican Council . For Cardinal Alfrink and for other Dutch bishops, he wrote numerous drafts for their statements in the debates of the council. For several bishops' conferences he gave lectures at their evening gatherings on the theological tradition of the subjects discussed at the council.

Already in the troubled years 1968/1969 Schillebeeckx came into conflict with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith . The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith criticized the content of the Dutch catechism, which Schillebeeckx helped to create . The reinterpretation of transubstantiation into a transsignification , the doctrine of original sin that deviated from dogma , his attitude towards the Immaculate Conception of Mary and statements about angels and demons were criticized in detail . Schillebeeckx refused to approve the encyclical Humanae Vitae Pauls VI. and opposed mandatory celibacy for priests. In 1979 Schillebeeckx had to sign up for his writing Jesus. To answer the story of a living again to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Both proceedings were eventually discontinued. For Schillebeeckx it was nevertheless bitter experience. Nonetheless, he remained critical and loyal to his church: "Because I love this church, I also went to Rome when I was quoted."

Schillebeeckx taught in Nijmegen until his retirement in 1983 and received great attention as one of the most important theologians of his time. His biblical and christological explanation of the faith in an independent continuation of the Nouvelle Théologie shaped the younger theology of the Dutch-Flemish-speaking area. His books have been translated into many languages.
