Life

He is the son of a Kant and Hegel researcher and a teacher with Czech-Polish-Finnish roots. David Fray began playing the piano at the age of four. His teacher was Jacques Rouvier, who also gave lessons to his French piano colleague Hélène Grimaud .

In addition to numerous prizes and awards, he won the Diploma of Outstanding Merit at the international Hamamatsu piano competition in Japan, the title of Young Talent of the Year from the Commission des Radios Francophones in Montréal (2004) and was elected Young Artist of the Year in France in 2004 . Century .

David Fray made his first orchestral CD with piano concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach (piano concerto in A major BWV 1055, piano concerto in f minor BWV 1056, piano concerto in g minor BWV 1058, piano concerto in d minor BWV 1052) with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie in 2008 Bremen recorded in the rehearsal hall of the orchestra in Bremen Osterholz-Tenever. The filmmaker Bruno Monsaingeon filmed the pianist in Swing, sing & think on these CD recordings.

In the same category, Fray was awarded the coveted French music prize Les Victoires de la musique classique on February 8, 2010 .

Fray, who is often compared to the Canadian pianist Glenn Gould because of his habitus , himself describes the German pianist Wilhelm Kempff as his role model. His singing, groping and yet narrative grand piano style characterizes one of “the most independent piano ghosts of the present”, wrote Kai Luehrs-Kaiser in Der Spiegel and added: “Fray plays the most exciting Bach in decades.”

He has been married to the Italian actress Chiara Muti since 2008; the conductor Riccardo Muti is his father-in-law.
