David Gwilt

David William Gwilt , MBE (born November 3, 1932 in Edinburgh ) is a Scottish composer , pianist , violinist and conductor . He lives in Hong Kong .

Life

From 1945 to 1950 he attended Sedbergh School in Yorkshire . In 1950 he won a scholarship to St John's College , Cambridge. From 1950 to 1955 he studied with Robin Orr and Philip Radcliffe at the University of Cambridge (Bachelor of Music).

From 1960 to 1970 he was a teacher at Winchester College . From 1967 to 1970 he was director of studies at the International Cello Center in London . Since 1970 he was a university lecturer and from 1981 professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (first professor of music). From 1971 to 1992 he headed the Faculty of Music. His students include Lam Bun-Ching and Chan Wing-wah .

From 1978 he was a member of the board of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra . From 1986 to 1991 he was director of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music Fund. From 1986 to 1988 he served on the board of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts . He is Honorary President of the Hong Kong Composers' Guild .
