Chan Wing-wah

Chan Wing-wah ( Chinese  陳永華  /  陈永华 , Pinyin Chen Yonghua , born February 2, 1954 in Hong Kong ) is a Chinese composer and conductor .

He is Vice President of Centennial College and Director of the Hong Kong University School of Management and President of the Hong Kong Collecting Society . Previously, he was Professor of Music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong . He was also chairman of the Hong Kong and vice-chairman of the Asian Composers' Association and a board member of the International Society for New Music .

As a composer, he created more than 100 works, including eight symphonies. He has received multiple awards, including the ACL Yoshiro IRINO Memorial Prize and Justice of the Peace. Chan Wing-wah is a member of the Election Committee for the 2012 Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's Chief Executive .

Life

Chan Wing-wah sang in a Catholic church choir from the age of sixteen. He graduated from Northcote College of Education in 1974 and graduated from Sir Robert Black College of Education at the Hong Kong Institute of Education in 1975 . From 1975 to 1979 he studied composition with David Gwilt at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and obtained his Bachelor of Arts (Music) in 1979 .

He received the Fellowship Diploma in Music Composition (FTCL) from Trinity College of Music in London in 1979 . From 1980 to 1985 he was a Commonwealth Fellow in Composition with John Beckwith at the University of Toronto and received a Master of Music (1981) and Doctor of Music (1985) degrees . Funded by the DAAD in 1986, he attended the Darmstadt summer courses of the International Music Institute Darmstadt . The European avant-garde, especially Hans Werner Henze and Olivier Messiaen , exerted a strong influence on him.

He justified his return to Hong Kong in an interview in 1994 as follows:

"I cannot accept known to posterity as a Canadian or Canadian Chinese composer."

He composed eight symphonies and mostly orchestral and chamber music. His works have been performed in Australia , China, Japan , Canada , New Zealand , the Philippines , Poland , Romania , Russia , Singapore , South Korea , Taiwan , Hungary , the United Kingdom and the United States . Performers included the Kroumata Percussion Ensemble , the Ensemble Antipodes , the Ensemble Fires of London , the Kronos Quartet and the Ensemble Sortisatio .

He was Chairman of the Hong Kong Composers' Guild from 1993 to 2004 . From 1993 to 2009 he was honorary conductor of the Hong Kong Children's Choir. Since 2001 he has been chairman of the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong (successor to Malcolm Bennett). From 1995 to 2004 he was a member of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Since 1995 he has been the music director of the Hong Kong Oratorio Society. From 1995 to 2000 he was on the board of the Guangzhou Federation of Youths. From 1996 to 2006 he was chairman of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund. From 1997 to 2001 he was a board member of the International Society for New Music and until 2002 Vice Chairman of the Asian Composers League . He has been a consultant to the Leisure and Cultural Services Department since 2000 and to the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra since 2005 . From 2002 to 2004 he was chairman of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (from 1994 to 1996 composer in residence ). From 2004 to 2005 he was on the advisory board of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra , from 2004 to 2006 of the China Broadcasting Chinese Orchestra and the Hong Kong Melody Makers. From 2005 to 2006 he was a member of the West Kowloon Cultural District Consultative Committee . He was inducted into the online version of the Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and became a member of the Chinese Musicians' Association in 2009 .

He has been teaching music at the CUHK since 1986, and in 1992 he headed the music department. In 1996 he became a reader . From 1998 to 2000 he was Vice Dean and from 2000 to 2006 Vice Rector of the Philosophical Faculty of the CUHK. From 2001 to 2007 he was a professor of music and has been an adjunct professor since then . In 2007 he became director of the Center for Creative and Performing Arts. From 2009 to 2013 he was deputy director and 2013/14 director of the College of Humanities and Law of the School of Professional And Continuing Education at the University of Hong Kong . Since 2017 he has been Vice President and Director of the School of Management at Centennial College.

On November 22, 2011, he was appointed as an elector for the professional group culture in the 1200-member Election Committee , which elects the Chief Executive and thus the head of government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The election will take place on March 25, 2012.
