Joshua Chan

Joshua Chan ( Chinese  陳錦標  /  陈锦标 , * 1962 in Hong Kong ) is a Chinese composer , violinist and erhu player. He was chairman of the Hong Kong Composers' Guild and the ACL .

Life

Chan learned Erhu from Tong Leung-tak and was concertmaster in the Hong Kong Youth Orchestra. From 1980 to 1983 he studied violin with Thomas Wang at the Hong Kong Conservatory. From 1983 he worked as a violin teacher at the Hong Kong Institute of Education. From 1984 to 1987 he studied composition at the Sydney Conservatory. In 1988 he worked as a music software specialist. From 1988 to 1994 he studied postgraduate at Hong Kong University . In 1992 he attended the Darmstadt summer courses . His teachers included Nicholas Cook , Graham Hair , Božidar Kos , Anne Boyd , Doming Lam , Law Wing-fai , Chris Babida, and Martin Wesley-Smith . From the 1990s he taught at the University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the Chinese University of Hong Kong . In 1995 he obtained his Ph.D. from the CHUK. He has been a guest producer at RTHK Radio 4 since 1995 . In 2001 he was appointed Professor of Electronic Music and Composition. Since 2001 he has been examining the Yamaha Music Examinations. From 2002 to 2003 he was an advisor to the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. From 2004 to 2014 he was chairman of the Hong Kong Composers' Guild . From 2007 to 2012 he was chairman of the Asian Composers League . He composed more than 150 works (including ballet music ). His music was u. a. performed at the Tribune internationale des compositeurs of the UNESCO in Paris and several world music days.
