Ada Lai

Ada Lai (chin .: 黎雅婷, * 1975 in Hong Kong ; as Lai Nga-ting ) is a Chinese composer and music theorist .

Life

Lai studied piano at Trinity College of Music in London. She obtained the LTCL diploma. In 1997 she received a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). In 1998 the Master of Music in Composition with the topic A Portfolio of Music Compositions followed and in 2000 the Master of Philosophy in Music Theory with the topic The Issue of Time in Messiaen's Music . Her teachers include Chan Wing-wah , Victor Chan and Cheong Wai-ling . She received her Ph.D. from the University of Melbourne in 2004. with Brenton Broadstock and Linda Kouvaras with the work The Issue of Time in Quatrain II (1977) by Tōru Takemitsu .

Her works have been performed at the ISCM World Music Days 2002 in Hong Kong, at concerts of the International Alliance for Women in Music in Washington DC and at festivals of the Asian Composers League . Musicians like the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra , the Ensemble Contrasts, the Eastern Winds Ensemble and Next Mushroom Promotion performed their works.

In 2010 her work Vibrissae (UA Ensemble Sortisatio ) was presented to the Tribune internationale des compositeurs and was a finalist at the 2010 CASH Golden Sail Music Awards in the category Best Serious Composition.

She works as a lecturer at the CUHK. Lai is also the secretary of the Hong Kong Composers' Guild .
