David Lebuser (born September 12, 1986 in Frankfurt (Oder) ) is a German extreme athlete . He is the first professional chair skater in Germany . He also offers WCMX workshops (abbreviation analogous to BMX , here wheelchair motocross ) for other wheelchair users in Germany. At the age of 21 he became paraplegic after falling into a stairwell.

childhood and education

Lebuser grew up in Frankfurt (Oder). He first attended a sports school in Frankfurt (Oder) and graduated from secondary school in 2003. He worked as a painter and varnisher and later went to the upper school center in Frankfurt (Oder). Before moving to Berlin in 2010 , he worked as a customer advisor. Since then he has done several internships, including in Helsinki , Finland.

Accident and rehabilitation

On August 28, 2008, Lebuser injured his spine after falling two floors down a stairwell. He tried to slide down the banister after a friend's birthday party. He has since been paraplegic and has a fracture of the first lumbar vertebra (L1). During his time in hospital and in rehab, the 2008 Summer Paralympics were held in Beijing , so Lebuser soon realized that you can do a lot more than just being driven around in a wheelchair. While he was still in the hospital, a friend showed him a YouTube video of Aaron Fotheringham doing a backflip in a wheelchair , which led him to go to skate parks and start chair skating. Not long after rehab, he also started playing wheelchair basketball .

Career

Since 2012 Lebuser has been participating in the WCMX World Championship, also known as Life Rolls On "They Will Skate Again", in Venice, California every year. In 2013 he was third in the WCMX group and fifth overall. In 2012 he placed fifth. In 2014 he won the overall ranking and won the "Best Overall Run" category.

In 2013 he started to hold WCMX workshops for other wheelchair users in different places in Germany. Before that there were no other chair skaters in Germany apart from him. He has also founded an action sports department at the German Wheelchair Sports Association (DRS).

Lebuser uses a personalized WCMX wheelchair for ChairSkating, which was built by Box Wheelchairs from California , USA . The special feature of the wheelchair is that it has suspension on all four wheels and is more stable than an everyday wheelchair. This enables him to do similar tricks as skateboarders or BMXers, as they cushion landings. In everyday life he uses the rsX wheelchair from the Dutch manufacturer TNS, some of which also have suspension.
