David Matthew Ceperley (born December 26, 1949 in Charleston , Virginia ) is an American physicist .

Ceperley graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor's degree in physics in 1971 and received his PhD from Cornell University in 1976 . As a post-doctoral student he was at the University of Paris-South and Rutgers University . He then went to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory . Since 1987 he has been a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign , where he works at the National Center for Supercomputer Applications .

Ceperley is known for his contributions to computational physics, especially quantum Monte Carlo methods and path-integral Monte Carlo methods for quantum systems at finite temperature. He applied this to superfluid helium and hydrogen under extreme conditions, among other things. In 1980 he and Bernie Alder calculated the ground state of the electron gas.

In 1998 he received the Aneesur Rahman Prize and in 1994 the Feenberg Medal . He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (since 1999), the American Association for the Advancement of Science , the American Physical Society and the National Academy of Sciences (2006).
