David Ouchterlony

Guy David Ouchterlony (born April 2, 1914 in Guelph , † January 20, 1987 in Toronto ) was a Canadian organist, music teacher and composer.

Ouchterlony was a student of Healey Willan and studied with Carl Weinrich in New York and George Dorrington Cunningham in London. He worked as organist and choirmaster at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church (1927-30) and St George's Anglican Church (1930-32) in Guelph, and as music director at Appleby College in Oakville, St Andrew's College in Aurora and Upper Canada College in Toronto. In Toronto he was organist and choirmaster at Holy Trinity Church (1932-37) and St Andrew's Presbyterian Church and in 1946 succeeded TJ Crawford at Timothy Eaton Memorial United Church , whose organist he remained until his death. From 1940 he taught at the Toronto Conservatory of Music (later Royal Conservatory of Music ), of which he was director from 1968 to 1977. In 1978 he became director of the Kiwanis Music Festival Association .

In 1950 Ouchterlony performed with the singer Jeanne Pengelly at New York's Carnegie Hall . For ten years he gave performances in the Toronto area with the Songmen men's choir , which he founded in the 1950s . As a radio presenter, he worked on the CBC series The Learning Stage from 1963-64 , from 1974-85 on the weekly Starlight Serenade of the CFRB and 1985-87 for the classical broadcaster Cobourg of the CFMX. Ouchterlony composed mainly short instrumental and vocal pieces, including the Anthem Trust in the Lord and Do Good and the organ piece Trumpet Tune (1957) as well as the Anthems, Introits and Descants collection for youth choir and A Carol Cantata .
