David Rosen (2009)

David Shlomo Rosen (born 1951 in Newbury , Berkshire , England) is a British rabbi. He is the third son of Rabbi Kopul Rosen, the founder of Carmel College in Oxfordshire, England. He received his school and academic training in England and Israel .

Life

He served in the Israel Defense Forces and was a rabbi in the troops stationed in Sinai . In 1975 he became rabbi of the largest Jewish Orthodox congregation in South Africa ( Green and Sea Point Hebrew Congregation , Cape Town ). There he also became a judge at the Beth Din (Rabbinical Court ) in Cape Town and the founder and chairman of the Cape Inter-Faith Forum , the interreligious council of Jews, Christians and Muslims in Cape Town.

Thereafter, Rosen was Chief Rabbi of Ireland from 1979 to 1985 . In 1985 he returned to Israel and became Dean of the Pinchas Sapir Center for Jewish Education and Culture in Jerusalem and finally Professor of Jewish Studies at the Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies . In 1997 he became director of the Anti-Defamation League in Israel.

Rosen is active in a number of organizations and forums that promote relations between Judaism and the other world religions: advisor on interreligious matters to the Grand Rabbinate of Israel; Board member at the King Abdullah Center for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue ; Co-President of the World Conference of Religions for Peace; Honorary President of the International Council of Christians and Jews ; Member of the Council of the World Congress of Imams and Rabbis for Peace; and, since 2001, International Director, Interreligious Affairs, American Jewish Committee . From 2005 to 2009 he also headed the International Jewish Committee for Interreligious Consultations (IJCIC).

David Rosen is married to Sharon, nee Rothstein, and has three daughters, Yakarah, Gabriella and Amirit.

Awards

For his contribution to Jewish-Catholic relations, he became the first Israeli citizen and first Orthodox rabbi of Pope Benedict XVI in November 2005 . appointed Commander of the Order of Gregorius . In the same year he received the Mount Zion Award . In December 2006, Rosen received the Raphael Lemkin Human Rights Award for founding the organization Rabbis for Human Rights . In 2010 he was promoted to Commander of the Order of the British Empire ( CBE ).
