Gloeocapsa is a genus from the class of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae).
description
Gloeocapsa forms groups of small, rounded to oval cells, which, like all cyanobacteria, lack the nucleus and plastids . The cells can be greenish, bluish or reddish to purple in color. Concentric layers around individual cells or cells lying in groups are wide, blistered, jelly-like envelopes. The sheaths can take on a yellow, brownish, orange or purple color due to the inclusion of pigments, which serves as UV protection.
Reproduction
The asexual multiplication takes place by cell division with three mutually perpendicular planes of division; Cell aggregates can fragment.
Sexual reproduction is absent in all cyanobacteria.
Types (selection)
- Gloeocapsa atrata
- Gloeocapsa coracina
- Gloeocapsa insignis
- Gloeocapsa opaca
- Gloeocapsa sanguinea
- Gloeocapsa thermalis
distribution
Gloeocapsa lives planktically and benthically in lakes, as well as on moist aerophytic substrates such as woods, stones (which can be decomposed) or mosses, but also in hot springs. The cyanobacteria can also occur as a partner in lichen symbioses .
