David Smith (physicist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

David Richard Smith (* 1964 in Okinawa , Japan ) is an American physicist.

Live and act

Smith earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1988 and his Ph.D. at the University of California, San Diego . As a post-doctoral student , he worked there from 1994 to 1997 on the application of plasmon resonance for biological and biochemical analyzes. He then worked as a consultant for Seashell Technology in San Diego until 2002. Since 2001 he has been an associate professor at the University of California, San Diego. In 2004 he moved to Duke University , where he was associate professor and from 2007 full professor and since 2008 William Bevan Professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering . He has also been visiting professor at Imperial College London since 2004 .

Smith does research on photonic crystals , metamaterials and plasmon nano-optics. In 2000 he discovered materials with a negative refractive index in the microwave range , which Wiktor Wesselago had predicted in 1967 . He later used these materials to make objects almost invisible in the microwave range .
