Sheldon Schultz

Sheldon Schultz (born January 21, 1933 in New York City , New York - † January 31, 2017 in San Diego , California ) was an American physicist .

Schultz is known for the discovery and study of metamaterials and negative index of refraction. He was a professor at the University of California, San Diego .

Schultz received his ME from Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey in 1954 and his Ph.D. at Columbia University in New York in 1960. In 1962 he became a Sloan Research Fellow and in 1969 a Fellow of the American Physical Society .

In 2003 the Center for Magnetic Recording Research awarded Schultz an annual award called In Honor of Former CMRR Director Sheldon Schultz for his services as director. Schultz died on January 31, 2017 in La Jolla , a neighborhood in San Diego.
