David Stuart Erskine, 13th Earl of Buchan (born November 6, 1815 - December 3, 1898 in Gloucester House , Shepperton on Thames ), was a Scottish nobleman .

Life

His father was Henry David Erskine, 12th Earl of Buchan ; his mother was Elizabeth Cole, daughter of Charles Shipley, brigadier general and governor of Grenada. With the death of his father, he inherited the title of Earl of Buchan , Lord Auchterhouse and Lord Cardross .

At a young age, David Stuart made his living as a jockey ; in his time as Earl, he held the position of Deputy Lieutenant (DL) in Linlithgow .

Although he had already signed over all of his holdings in Linlithgow to his son in 1872 against the payment of an annual sum of £ 500 and received these payments regularly, he had to declare his bankruptcy in 1894 for a sum of £ 388.

David Stuart converted to the Roman Catholic faith shortly before his death; he was buried in the place where he died.

He was married twice. The first marriage, on April 27, 1849, to Agnes Graham, daughter of James Smith, had two sons; Shipley Gordon Stuart , heir and later 14th Earl, and Albany Mar Stuart. A third son died as a toddler. The second marriage was on July 17, 1876 with Maria, daughter of William James, this marriage remained childless.
