David Thomas Lewis

David Thomas Lewis (born April 25, 1912 in Salt Lake City , Utah , †  September 28, 1983 ) was an American lawyer and politician . After his appeal by President Dwight D. Eisenhower , he served as a federal judge at the Federal Court of Appeals for the tenth district from 1956 to 1977 .

Career

After attending school, David Lewis graduated from the University of Utah , where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1935 . In 1937 at the College of Law this university the Juris Doctor followed , whereupon he opened a law practice in Salt Lake City the following year. He operated this until 1950, interrupted by his service in the US Army between 1945 and 1946. From 1947 to 1948 he was a Republican member of the House of Representatives of Utah . Between 1950 and 1956 he served as a judge in a state district court in Utah.

On May 17, 1956, Lewis was appointed by President Eisenhower to succeed Orie Leon Phillips as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit , covering the states of Colorado , Kansas , New Mexico , Oklahoma , Utah and Wyoming . After confirmation by the US Senate on June 4 of the same year, he was able to take office the next day. From 1970 to 1977 he was Chief Judge Chairman of this federal court . On December 3, 1977, he switched to senior status and thus effectively retired. Its seat fell to Monroe G. McKay ; Oliver Seth took over the presidency of the court . David Lewis died on September 28, 1983 in Salt Lake City and was buried in the local Mount Olivet Cemetery .
