David William Lewis

David William Lewis (born October 24, 1815 in Hancock County , Georgia , † December 28, 1885 in Dahlonega , Georgia) was an American lawyer and a Confederate politician .

Career

David William Lewis was born about eight months after the end of the British-American War . In 1837 he graduated from Franklin College . He then worked as a private secretary for Governor George Rockingham Gilmer (1790-1859). He was admitted to the bar in 1843. He then sat between 1845 and 1855 in the Georgia House of Representatives , where he represented Hancock County. His tenure was overshadowed by the Mexican-American War . Lewis was a founding member of the Georgia State Agricultural Society, serving as Secretary for many years , and its third President. In 1855 he was appointed a trustee at the University of Georgia - a position he held for 30 consecutive years. During the Civil War he was elected to the First Confederate Congress in November 1861 as a member of the Fifth Constituency of Georgia , where he served until 1864. Lewis became the first president of the newly formed North Georgia Agricultural College in 1873 . He held the post until his death on December 28, 1885. His body was first buried in Dahlonega City Cemetery, but then reburied in 1891 at the North Georgia Agricultural College.

A memorial by David William Lewis was erected in his honor in 1891 on the campus of North Georgia Agricultural College.
