Davidstein (boulder)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The David stone is the "Goliath stone"

The Davidstein is a boulder in the Mardorf district of Neustadt am Rübenberge in the Hanover region in Lower Saxony . It is protected as a natural monument under the name "Goliathstein" .

description

The Davidstein is one of numerous erratic boulders that remained in the northwest of today's Steinhuder Meer after one of the glacier advances of the Elster Cold Age. In 1986 the stone of David was uncovered during an investigation. With a weight of over 60  tons, a height of around 2.5 m and a circumference of over 5 m, it is the second largest boulder in Lower Saxony after the Giebichenstein . The gray-red, medium-grain granite gneiss with feldspar inclusions of up to 1 cm in length is located in a parking lot on Strandweg in the east of Mardorf. After the examination, about half of the stone of David is again in the ground.

Sage and the Goliath Stone

In a local legend recorded in the 1950s, the David stone on the White Dune is associated with the Goliath stone located further west on the Netteln Berg near Lütjen Mardrup . According to this, the giant Goliath smashed his stone after he failed to throw it from the Brunnenberg in the Rehburg Mountains as far as David had succeeded with his stone.

The Goliathstein was further shattered by explosions at the beginning of the 20th century . Today its fragments are smaller than the stone of David. This often leads to confusion.

Natural monument

A "David stone" - wisely written with quotation marks - is protected as a natural monument with the number ND-H 174 according to the 19th ordinance on natural monuments in the Hanover region . The description and position coordinates in the also binding annexes to the regulation are not those of the David stone, but those of the Goliath stone.

In the same documents there is a natural monument with the coordinates of the stone of David. Its description corresponds to the David stone, but it is officially referred to as ND-H 173 "Goliath stone".

An information board set up by the Mardorf am Steinhuder Meer tourist office at the Davidstein refers to it as the ND-H 174 Davidstein, while the text version available online speaks of the natural monument ND H173.

Geotope

The map of the Lower Saxony State Office for Mining, Energy and Geology shows a geotope 3521/07 "Goliathstein" with the coordinates of the Stone of David.
