Davina Marcia Herbert Ingrams, 18th Baroness Darcy de Knayth DBE (born July 10, 1938 , † February 24, 2008 ) was a British noblewoman , politician and athlete.

life and career

Davina Marcia Herbert was born in 1938 to Mervyn Herbert, 17th Baron Darcy de Knayth , and his wife Vida Cuthbert. Through her paternal grandfather, George Herbert, 4th Earl of Powis , she was descended from Robert Clive, 1st Baron Clive . Her father died as a pilot in World War II in 1943 . With that she inherited his title, which can also be inherited in the female line.

Herbert studied at the Sorbonne in Paris , among others . In 1960 she married the publicist Rupert Ingrams; the marriage resulted in a son and two daughters. In 1964 Ingrams was seriously injured in a car accident and her husband died as a result of the accident. Davina Ingrams was initially paralyzed from the neck down, but was later able to move her arms and upper body partially again.

Ingrams was heavily involved in disabled sports and especially in the Paralympics . She also took part in them herself. At the 1968 Summer Paralympics she won a gold medal in swimming in Tel Aviv , and four years later she won a bronze medal in table tennis at the Paralympics in Heidelberg .

She has held a seat in the House of Lords since 1963, when female peeresses were first admitted . There she also campaigned in particular for the needs of people with disabilities. Even after the reform of the House of Lords in 1999, Ingrams continued to have a seat there until her death as one of the 90 members elected by the bearers of hereditary titles of nobility.

After her death, the title passed to her son Caspar David Ingrams .
