Dawson Turner

Dawson Turner (born October 18, 1775 in Great Yarmouth , † June 21, 1858 in London ) was a British banker, antiquarian and naturalist ( botanist ). Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Turner ".

Life

Turner was the son of a bank owner and his mother Elizabeth Cotman was the daughter of the Mayor of Yarmouth. Turner was studying at Cambridge, but had to drop out after his father was dying and he joined the family's bank in 1796. In the same year he married Mary Palgrave. After the death of his wife in 1850, he married again and moved to London (Old Brompton).

He also dealt scientifically with botany and published several botanical books and in the Annals of Botany. On June 28, 1801, Turner, nicknamed Theodotus II, was elected a member ( matriculation no. 1016 ) of the Leopoldina . elected. In 1802 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society and in 1816 a foreign member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences .

From 1820 he turned to antiquarian interests, learned drawing with his children from John Sell Cotman , with whom he also traveled to Normandy, which led to the publication of the book Architectural Antiquities of Normandy (1822) with illustrations by Cotman.

He was the grandfather of Joseph Dalton Hooker since his eldest daughter married William Jackson Hooker .

Honors

According to him, the moss genus Dawsonia R.Br. and the algae genus Turner Ella F.Schmitz named.
