De Smeth is the name of a noble family from the Netherlands .

history

The Brussels family, who came to Amsterdam via Cologne in the middle of the 17th century , was promoted to the nobility in the 18th century by Tsarina Catherine the Great because of financial aid to the Russian court. In the 19th century he was appointed baron by the Dutch King Wilhelm I. The De Smeths belonged to the Amsterdam regent class , and in the 18th century they acquired ownership of the Ambachtherrlichkeit Alphen and Rietveld , the High Glory Deurne and the glory Liessel linked to them .

One family member, Theodorus de Smeth (1779-1859), was the half-brother of Henriëtte d'Oultremont de Wégimont and thus a brother-in-law of King Wilhelm I.
