The first season of Dead of Summer was ordered on November 18, 2015. The series was conceived by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz , who already created the series Once Upon a Time together . Horowitz also directed the first episode. In February 2016, it was confirmed that Elizabeth Mitchell and Elizabeth Lail , who had previously starred in Lost and Once Upon a Time , would star in the series. Filming for Dead of Summer began on March 21, 2016 in Vancouver . In April 2016, June 28, 2016 was named as the premiere date of the series.
