Aselin Debison (born June 27, 1990 in Glace Bay , Nova Scotia ) is a Canadian pop and folklore singer.
The daughter of a hairdresser and a landscaper , she was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. Their name comes from Aslan, the lion in CS Lewis The Chronicles of Narnia . Her singing career began in 1999 when she was asked to sing at a demonstration by miners in her hometown. Soon after, she began working on her Christmas album The Littlest Angel , which was released in 2001. In 2002 she was discovered by Peter Gelb, President of Sony Classical, at the East Coast Music Awards. Her debut album Sweet is the Melody was released in the same year.
In 2003 Aselin was selected to sing for Queen Elizabeth II at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto , Ontario. The Queen visited Canada for her anniversary celebration.
Aselin sang with Bruce Guthro during the CBC special "Aselin Debison: Sweet is the Melody". She showed a selection of pieces from her debut CD and also classic songs from Cape Breton Island . Among them was the island anthem. During the "Sweet Is The Melody" tour, she also appeared in New York and Tokyo .
Aselin's cover of the medley Somewhere Over The Rainbow / What A Wonderful World by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole became very popular in Korea and Japan. Thanks to its inclusion in soft pop samplers such as Crossover Romance by Sony Music Korea / Splash Music in 2003, the song became an important element of ambient music in many parts of East Asia. Various other tracks from Sweet Is The Melody were incorporated into Korean and Japanese samplers.
In March 2005 Aselin came back with her album Bigger Than Me . The singles Life and Faze were very popular on soft rock / pop radio. This time she wrote her songs with the help of Dave Thomson (co-founder of the teen pop band Wave) and Thomas Salter.
