Deborah Frances-White

Deborah Frances-White (born December 10, 1967 in Brisbane ) is a London-based comedian, writer and screenwriter who also offers corporate seminars on charisma, diversity and inclusion. She is a British and Australian citizen. She moderates the podcasts Global Pillage and The Guilty Feminist . She uses the platform and network she built through The Guilty Feminist to support several charities related to refugees and human rights.

Early years

Frances-White was born in Australia and was adopted when she was ten days old . She grew up in Brisbane , Queensland . When she was a teenager, her family converted to Jehovah's Witnesses . Frances-White has since left the church and calls herself an atheist . During their year abroad, she moved to London and later studied English at Harris Manchester College of Oxford University .

Career

Frances-White is one of three directors of the improvisational theater group The Spontaneity Shop, which she founded in 1996 together with Tom Salinsky. After developing a number of improvisational formats at the Spontaneity Shop (including the improvised romantic comedy "DreamDate" which had a pilot on ITV ), Frances-White turned to stand-up comedy . Her first major solo show was How to Get Almost Anyone to Want to Sleep With You, which she performed in 2007 at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and in 2008 at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Frances-White's recent shows have been more personal. Cult Following (2012) looked at her experiences as a youthful Jehovah's Witness. “Half a Can of Worms” (2013) was about tracking down their biological family, and “Friend of a Friend of Dorothy” (2015) was about feminism, sexism and homophobia.

Frances-White continued to develop new improvisation formats. "Voices in Your Head" is a show in which comedians, improvisers and actors can create comedy characters while the audience is watching. Guests included Phill Jupitus , Sara Pascoe, Russell Tovey , Mike McShane, and Hannibal Buress . In 2015 she created "The Beau Zeaux", an improvised comedy with changing actors such as Marcus Brigstocke, Thom Tuck , Rachel Parris, Brendan Murphy, Ed Coleman, Milly Thomas and Pippa Evans. Guests included Russell Tovey and Dan Starkey.

Her BBC Radio 4 series, "Deborah Frances-White Rolls the Dice," first aired in Spring 2015 and featured stories about her adoption, fictitious marriage and the search for her biological family. The episodes were titled “Half a Can of Worms”, “Cult Following”, “Visa Issues” and “Who's Your Daddy”? In January 2016, Frances-White won the “Writers' Guild of Great Britain” award for the radio series in the “Best Radio Comedy” category. A second radio series was first broadcast in autumn 2016.

On television, Frances-White was a guest on “Mock the Week”, “Have I Got News for You”, “Politics live” and today “Tonight with Vladmir Putin”.

Together with Sofie Hagen, she presented the podcast “The Guilty Feminist”. She is also the creator and presenter of the podcast "Global Pillage", a comedy panel show. In 2019 "The Guilty Feminist" and Amnesty International teamed up for the "Secret Policeman's Tour", which consisted of three shows with comedy, music and discussion in support of human rights.

Corporate work

Frances-White appears regularly at corporate events and speaks about confidence, charisma, diversity and sexism. Her TEDx talk on "Charisma vs Stage-Fright" was cited by James Caan as the secret of his presentation skills.

Author

With her writing partner Philippa Waller, Frances-White contributed two episodes of Young Dracula in 2014. She co-wrote two books: The Improv Handbook with Tom Salinsky and Off the Mic with Marsha Shandur, both published by Bloomsbury. She writes for Standard Issue Magazine. In 2018, Virago released The Guilty Feminist, a spin-off from their podcast. Her debut feature film, the comedy thriller Say My Name, premiered on March 19, 2019.
