Orders

The ten-armed cuttlefish (Decabrachia, also Decembrachiata or Decapodiformes) include the vast majority of the cephalopods (Cephalopoda) living today .

They are characterized by having ten arms, of which the 4th pair of arms, counting from the head , is transformed into tentacles . The suction cups are stalked, in contrast to the octopus's suction cups, which are seated broadly on the arm , and the functioning of the suction cups is different in the two groups. The suction cups of the ten-armed squid are reinforced at the edge by horn rings, in individual groups these horny suction cup rings can be further converted into hooks.

Systematics

The ten-armed squids (Decabrachia, Decapodiformes) form the sister group of the eight-armed squids (Vampyropoda), in which the Octobrachia and the vampire squid- like (Vampyromorpha) are grouped together. The subdivision of the ten-armed squid is not yet stable. While some authors distinguish up to four orders (and more), others only recognize two orders.
