The dwarf cuttlefish (Sepiolidae) are a family in the same order (Sepiolida) of squid , very closely with the cuttlefish are related.

features

Dwarf squid are generally smaller than cuttlefish , do not have a phragmocone and a rounder coat . The coat length is usually one to four, sometimes up to eight centimeters. In addition to eight arms fitted with suction cups, they have two catch tentacles.

Dwarf squids live in a symbiosis with bioluminescent bacteria, including Vibrio fischeri . They are located in a luminous organ in the coat of the cephalopod and are supplied with a sugar- amino acid solution. In return, they emit just enough light that the silhouette of the octopus disappears in the incident light when you look at it from below.

habitat

Most species live in shallow coastal waters of the Pacific , the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic and its marginal seas. They can move around both with the help of their fins and by recoil from their siphon .

Systematics

While the systematics of the squid is now generally accepted at family level, the classification of the larger groups within the squid is not yet stable. In their 2005 monograph, Jereb and Roper lead the Sepiolids again as a family within the Sepiida.
