Dechloran 603 (abbreviation Dec 603 ) is a chemical compound that is used as a flame retardant . It is structurally related to Dechloran Plus and Dechloran 602 .
Extraction and presentation
Dechlorane 603 can be prepared from two equivalents of hexachlorocyclopentadiene and one equivalent of norbornadiene by means of the Diels-Alder reaction . Dechlorane 603 is also obtained by reacting aldrin with hexachlorocyclopentadiene.
Dechloran 603 is also contained in technical grade aldrin and dieldrin .
use
Dechloran 603 and other structurally related substances were used as a replacement for Mirex (also called Dechloran ) as a flame retardant.
Environmental relevance
Dechlorane 603 was found in sediment samples from the Great Lakes . In the study period from 1985 to 2016, various biological matrices from the federal environmental specimen bank were examined for dechlorane 603.
