Declan Hadrian Hill is a Canadian journalist, lecturer, and consultant. He is one of the world's leading experts on match fixing and bribery in international sport. In 2008 he received his PhD on football and organized crime from Oxford University under Diego Gambetta ( Greed and Glory: match-fixing in professional football ). His book "Secure Siege - How Football Games Are Manipulated" was published in 15 languages. There he describes the dangers for international sport due to the expansion of the betting market and also goes into possible game manipulation in professional football. He is also a reviewer for "Global Integrity" and has in the past u. a. dealt with the influence of the Russian mafia in professional ice hockey .

Beginnings

Declan Hill is a graduate of the National Theater School of Canada , Trinity College in Toronto and the University of Oxford. He appeared in supporting roles at the Shaw Festival and other Canadian theaters. He also played in the Indian TV series Bhaarat ek Khoj . After working at a street clinic in Calcutta , he gradually turned away from the theater and became one of the founding members of the Canada's Doctors Without Borders (MSF) volunteer chapter . Later he turned to journalism. First he worked as an investigative journalist for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), or their flagship program fifth estate , and later as a newsworld international news anchor .

Before publishing his book, Hill created documentaries on the murders of Filipino journalists, the killing of the head of the Canadian mafia , the fighting in Kosovo, the ethnic cleansing in Iraq, the pagan religion in Bolivia and honor killings in Turkey.

He has also lectured to a variety of organizations. These include u. a. the IOC , the Dutch Football Association ( KNVB ) and the Australian and New Zealand sports rights organizations ANZSLA . In 2007 Declan Hill won the Canadian Association of Journalists Award for Best Radio Documentation. He also received an Amnesty International Canada 2003 Media Award in the Audio / Video Award category for the report “Too Many Reasons To Die” on the CBC radio program Dispatches . Based on his book Secure Victories: Football and Organized Crime, or How Games Are Rigged, UEFA examines 26 football matches (including UI Cup matches and three qualifying matches for the UEFA Champions League ). The DFB also took a closer look at two games: Hannover 96 - 1. FC Kaiserslautern on November 26, 2005 and Karlsruher SC - Sportfreunde Siegen on August 7, 2005.

In 2009 Hill received the Play The Game Award for the person with the greatest dedication to maintaining impeccable and honest sport. In 2018 he was appointed Associate Professor in the Financial Investigation Faculty of the University of New Haven .

In his spare time, Hill goes to boxing . In Cuban Havana he trained groups of amateur and competitive fighters.
