Deep-fried butter at the 2010 Texas State Fair

Deep-fried butter (English for "deep-fried butter") is a pastry that originated in the United States . It consists of butter wrapped in a sweet batter and then fried . Sometimes it is put on a stick beforehand or it is then covered with a layer of sugar and cinnamon.

The pastries are offered almost exclusively at fairs, often in combination with similar dishes such as corn dogs , fried bacon , fried cookie dough, fried Kool-Aid or various fried chocolate bars. One of the most famous stands belongs to Abel Gonzales Jr., who sells up to 40,000 servings of the dish at the Texas State Fair in Dallas . Gonzales, who had offered fried bacon or deep-fried cola in previous years, invented the dish for the 2009 Texas State Fair . In Gonzales' original recipe, he wrapped a piece of butter in a sweet batter and described the taste as the butteriest bread and butter that too eating is. He offered the dish there in the flavors natural, cherry, grape and garlic. There the dish won the prize for the most creative creation. In the following years it spread through fairs in North America, and could be seen for example in San Diego , Des Moines , Orange County , Wisconsin or Toronto .

In the short period of its existence, the dish has become a popular example of "unhealthy American cuisine ". The Los Angeles Times already attests it a reputation as perhaps "the worst imaginable dish on the planet". The butter alone, without the batter, without frying oil and without a sugar coating, has around 500 kilocalories. In California, for example, stalls offered a coronary combo ( heart disease combination ) that included a portion of fried butter and chocolate-coated bacon . In the short space of time, the court became so well known that various American politicians have already expressed an opinion on fried butter. Sarah Palin expressed the desire to give it a try. Restaurant critic Anthony Bourdain , who was known for eating the weirdest dishes from around the world, jokingly called the introduction of the dish a "communist conspiracy".
