Deepak Kumar Mondal (born October 12, 1979 in Jamshedpur , Jharkhand ) is an Indian football player . The defender plays for Mohun Bagan in Kolkata and for the Indian national team .

Career

Mondal's father played football in Jamshedpur and for a regional team from Chota Nagpur , so Deepak Mondal came into contact with this sport at an early age. He played for the Tata Football Academy from his hometown, JCT Mills FC from Phagwara and from 2001 to 2005 for the East Bengal Club in Kolkata , with which he won two Indian championships, 2003 and 2004, and the 2003 ASEAN Cup . At the time, Mondal was considered one of the best Indian defenders and won the AIFF Player of the Year Award in 2002 . In 2002 he was also appointed to the Indian national team.

An injury set him back in 2005; only after nine months he was able to make his comeback with his new club Mahindra United in the Mumbai Elite Division and made the best defense in the league with Mahesh Gawli . In 2006 he was Indian champion and cup winner with MU , then he moved to Mohun Bagan AC , with whom he won the regional championship in the Calcutta Football League in 2008 and 2009 , but could not win a title in the national championship.

In 2011 he moved to Prayag United . He returned to East Bengal in 2014, but did not stay long this time and moved to Mumbai City FC that same year . For the Indian national team, he played 62 games.

Play style

The defender is known as a hard working player; he is said to have the attention and instinct of a hunter. Although Mondal has a height of 1.73 m, which is unfavorable for defenders, he is considered to be very dominant in the header duels. Internationally, Mondal first attracted attention at the 1999 South Asian Championship , which India won that year.
