life and career
Murphy was born in New York to Sally Kandle and Daniel Murphy. At the age of 19, on the advice of her father, who was of Irish descent , she accepted both US citizenship and Irish citizenship .
After graduating from Ithaca College , she worked as a broker on Wall Street and later as an interior decorator . As a balance to her professional activity, she started cycling at the age of 32 and soon achieved her first successes. From 1995 she started internationally for Ireland.
The Irish cycling association Cycling Ireland decided not to send a women's team to the 1996 Summer Olympics for financial reasons . Murphy was therefore unable to take part in the Atlanta games. In 1997 she won the road race at the World Championship for Women over 30.
In a qualifying race in Montevideo , Uruguay , she finished fourth in November 1999, which she qualified for the Summer Olympics in Sydney the following year . She was the first woman to start cycling for Ireland at the Olympic Games. In her race, which took place on September 25, 2000, she was involved in an early fall and later suffered a flat tire which forced her to give up. Murphy couldn't finish her only Olympic competition.
After the Olympics, Murphy retired from her active career at the age of 41. As part of New York's application for the 2012 Summer Olympics , she founded the Star Track organization , which aims to introduce children to cycling. In the following years she was also involved as a trainer at Star Track .
In 2002 she married the lawyer Lawrence Bader, the couple had one child. In 2014 she died of complications from cancer.
