Delbert Leon Stapley (* 11. December 1896 in Mesa , Arizona Territory ; † 19th August 1978 in Salt Lake City , Utah ) was an apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints and was from 1950 until his death the College of the Twelve Apostles .

Life

Stapley grew up with eight siblings in the Arizona Territory. At the age of 18 he served as a missionary in the Southern States Mission in the southern United States . During the First World War he served in the Marine Corps . Later, Stapley, who had married in Salt Lake Temple in January 1918 , worked in his father's hardware store, which he eventually took over and expanded. At the age of 25 he was elected to the Mesa City Council . His marriage had three children.

On October 5, 1950, Stapley was named an Apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by George Albert Smith , becoming a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. On August 19, 1978, Stapley died of heart failure while walking near his home in Salt Lake City .
