William Delme Thomas (born September 12, 1942 in Bancyfelin , Carmarthenshire ) is a former Welsh rugby union player who played in the second row . He was active for the Welsh national team and the British and Irish Lions .

Thomas started rugby at the age of twelve. Before that, he mostly played football . In 1966 he was first invited to tour the Lions without having previously played an international match for Wales. His national team debut followed against New Zealand in the second test of the series. He ousted the actual captain Mike Campbell-Lamerton . In 1968 he was again part of the Lions and had to play in the front row in two friendly matches . Both series were clearly lost, the selection won no game against the national teams. In 1971 the only successful series of the Lions in New Zealand succeeded, Thomas was back.

In 1972, Thomas led the Llanelli RFC as captain to win the Welsh Championship and a win over the New Zealand All Blacks that went down in history. A year earlier, he had won the Grand Slam at the Five Nations with Wales .
