The company emerged in 2006 from the merger of Demag Cranes & Components and Gottwald Port Technology , which were previously separately managed subsidiaries of Demag Holding .

In 1819 Demag Cranes & Components was founded under the name Mechanische Werkstätten Harkort & Co. in Wetter an der Ruhr . The successor company to the Mechanische Werkstätten Harkort was merged into the Deutsche Maschinenbau-Aktiengesellschaft (Demag) in 1910 .

The forerunner of today's Gottwald Port Technology was founded in 1906 under the name Maschinenfabrik Ernst Halbach AG in Düsseldorf. The machine factory, now trading as Leo Gottwald KG , was taken over in 1988 by Demag, which is now part of the Mannesmann Group.

When the Mannesmann Group was reorganized in 1992, Mannesmann Demag Fördertechnik AG was founded with its headquarters in Wetter. This took over the mobile crane division in 1996 and was renamed Mannesmann Dematic AG in 1997 . When the Mannesmann Group was broken up as part of the takeover by Vodafone in 2000, Demag Holding, which u. a. also included the crane activities to Siemens AG . A year later, Siemens sold Demag to the US financial investor KKR (Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts); However, this did not affect the automotive and mobile crane division, which Siemens sold in 2002 to the US construction machinery manufacturer Terex . The Demag Cranes AG was demerged in 2006 by KKR from Demag Holding and brought 2006 stock market on 23 June. After that, the majority of the company was initially in free float and was part of the MDAX .

In May 2010 the Swedish investor cevian Capital took a 10% stake and became the largest single shareholder; this triggered a phase of intense takeover speculation. On October 8, 2010, Demag Cranes finally announced that it had been contacted by foreign companies, but saw no need for discussion in this regard. On the same day, the Finnish competitor Konecranes confirmed that Demag Cranes had refused an offer to talk.

On May 2, 2011, the US company Terex finally submitted a takeover offer of EUR 41.75 per share, which was raised to EUR 45.50 on June 16, 2011. On July 5, 2011, the takeover offer achieved an acceptance rate of over 71%. In January 2014, Terex finally completed a squeeze-out ; thus the company was taken off the stock exchange.

On May 16, 2016 it was announced that the Terex MHPS is to be sold to the Finnish company Konecranes for 1.13 billion euros after a previous merger between Terex and Konecranes had failed. After the takeover by Konecranes , the company was renamed Demag Cranes & Components GmbH again.
