Denah Lida

Denah Lida (born September 9, 1923 in New York City , † July 27, 2007 ) was an American Romance philologist and Hispanist .

life and work

Denah Levy's parents immigrated to the United States from the Sephardic milieu of Thessaloniki . She studied at Hunter College and Columbia University (Master's thesis: El Sefardi de Nueva York. Observaciones sobre el judeo-espanol de Esmirna , 1944).

In 1952 she received her doctorate from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México with the thesis El sefardi esmirniano de Nueva York (Mexico 1952). From 1955 to 1986 she taught Romance studies at Brandeis University .

Denah Lida was the second wife of the Romanist Raimundo Lida .
